As the number of requests for our services increases, FLVAC is approaching 2,500 calls per year.
During our busiest hours, we can have up to four ambulances out at a time. We are looking for new members who are willing to respond and help their fellow neighbours during these hours, particularly in the day time!
Membership Categories and Requirements
The road to becoming an EMT and a general member at FLVAC is a long but rewarding road. For new members, FLVAC hosts two membership categories.
Cadets membership status is a status granted to an applicant who is between 16 - 18 years of age and must commit to 6 hours of service biweekly.
Probationary membership is a status granted to an applicant 18 years of age and over. This memnership status is designated as a period of time when a new member is in training and becoming acquianted with the Corps' operations. Those under this membership category must commit to 22 hours of service biweekly.
Auxiliary membership is a status granted to an applicant who wish to be a non-riding member. This status is designed to allow volunteers to join the Corps without obligation of taking emergency calls due to physical or mental disability, age, or other conditions. During the probationary period, auxillary members are assigned a sponsor for the first 4-6 months.
FLVAC requires that new members attend EMT school within one year of start date. EMT school is a five-month course that consists of 230 hours of in-person instruction in addition to the online component. Classes generally follow the Fall or Spring semester. Admission to the summer session is rare and space is limited.
Upon successfully meeting all requirements, probationary members can be promoted to a General member. The status of General membership is considered synonymous with the term 'Full Member'. This membership category is also required to committ 22 hours of service biweekly.
Not a Fair Lawn Resident? Not a problem!
We accept members who live in or out of town! We currently have members who are residents of Paterson, Oakland, and Garfield-just to name a few. Our only requirement is that during scheduled shifts, you must be physically present in the Borough of Fair Lawn.
